My dad was diagnosed with early onset dementia at 65 and passed away a couple of years ago. While my mum had every right to be swallowed by the unfairness of it all, luckily for us she was not built that way, she took this awful situation as an opportunity to help others facing the same situation.
Noticing how difficult everyday things had become with Dad, with trips for coffee or lunch often ending with him refusing to give his order, tearing up the paper serviettes, or trying to pocket all the spoons. Mum partnered with a local café owner to create a safe, welcoming space for carers of loved ones with dementia or Alzheimer's. That's how the Forget Me Not Memory Café was born.
What started as a single café in Roleystone grew into a statewide movement. Mum and her wonderful band of friends and volunteers have helped lighten the heavy load for so many families, via this simple yet effective initiative.
These games, are designed to be played at the memory cafés and are the very least I could do to show my love, appreciation and support.
